THE DARTMOOR SHEPHERD'S HUT COMPANY
Our
Story
Nick and Helen live in the wilds of Dartmoor with their two daughters and menagerie of pet and rescue animals (Including beautiful Valais Blacknose Sheep- Yes we really are Shepherds!). They have decades of experience in restoring and converting old properties as well as building from scratch. They share a passion for clever design, careful craftmanship and working with timber. In 2020 they moved to their wonderful Dartmoor idyll which inspired this new venture. One that marries together all their experience and skills. The Dartmoor Shepherd's hut company was born. Three years in planning and preparation we are finally producing huts. Just a small number each year. Each made with unique features, skilled craftmanship and a little bit of Dartmoor magic...

Nick
Nick was originally trained as a cabinet maker and then went on to study antique furniture restoration at the prestigious West Dean College. In the years that followed he started his own business restoring furniture for the public and working for the National Trust on the furniture within their properties. Furniture making and restoration soon branched out into property as Nick and Helen worked on making their own homes beautiful and unique. Nick's passion for property and building grew and soon he was converting barns and embarking on new builds too. This experience has been invaluable when building Shepherd's huts as Nick has found that applying these traditional construction methods results in a superior hut. Robust, with attention to detail and special touches to elevate the design.
Helen
Helen met Nick when she was at university and they started working on building projects together. Keen on design and determined to get stuck in, Helen worked on the properties at weekends and the holidays. Children, and animals came along but Helen has always been involved in the decision making and design elements of the projects. Now the children are older, she is able to play an integral role at the Dartmoor Shepherd's Hut Company. Helen is a potter and makes the tiles for every hut, each is unique and uses foliage from Dartmoor. When Helen is not with the children or working on the huts, she can be found out in the fields with her flock of Valais Blacknose Sheep which she adores beyond words and breeds as pets for the public.
